Glass Hearts

You told me that you
Loved me
And I did not yet know
What it meant to be loved

So I believed you
Just like when I believed
You did not sleep with her

And when you said
You would not yell
Or throw things anymore;
I believed that too

I remember you smashed
The photo of the two of us –
The one I gave you for Christmas
You said you loved it too

That shattered glass
Should have been a sign
That you did not know
What love meant either

Because if you knew
What it meant to love
Then you would not have thrown
That picture at the wall –

And broken it
The same way
You did me.
