And So She Melted Right Away

They told her to be pretty,
And so pretty, she strove to be.

They told her not to show she cared,
And so still and stoic, she remained.

They told her to hide her tears,
And so cover her tears, she did.

They told her to be herself,
And so she became as unique as can be.

They told her to be like all the others,
And so it became hard to understand.

They told her she was special,
And so her hopes were raised.

They told her she was no more important than anyone else,
And so she started to feel like she couldn’t breathe.

They told her she would grow out of it,
And so wait and wait she did.

They told her it was all in her head,
And so her disorientation grew.

It said only take one or two,
And so she took five more.

They told her they didn’t know what to do,
And so she stayed quiet.

They told her she needed help,
And so she explained she couldn’t do it.

They told her they loved her,
And so she told them it was too late.
